A Tasmanian devil

While it was a relatively quiet season in NSW, NSW RFS members were active interstate in 2015/16 fire season. In particular a long deployment to the Tasmania saw the largest ever RAFT deployment to help save the World Heritage Listed Areas in the north-west of the state. This issue of the Bush Fire Bulletin features some of the behind-the-scenes elements to this deployment.

Also featured are the hazard reductions achieved before Winter, advise for members on conducting a Household Property Assessment and updates on the science behind fire behaviour.

Bursts of activity

The fire season in NSW for 2015/16 was characterized by bursts of activity. Predictions had been for a difficult fire season however in NSW at least, it was relatively quiet. Some quick moving fires early in the season kept firefighters busy. Fire in Western Australia, Victoria and especially Tasmania occupied the minds and hearts of the NSW RFS members throughout the early part of 2016. The deployment to Tasmania includes specialists such a remote area firefighters and a large number of trucks and other equipment. This edition of the Bush Fire Bulletin also includes a liftout poster introducing the new style of aerial firefighting which uses the Large and Very Large Air Tankers.

Fire and Ice: winter fire activity

Some surprising fire activity throughout the winter and assisting other agencies with floods and storms, kept NSW RFS members busy in the latter part of 2015. Significant preparation for the 2015/16 fire season has been undertaken including hazard reduction and the introduction of new aviation capabilities.

Pilliga flares up

Interstate deployments throughout Australia dominated the latter part of the 2014/15 fire season. NSW RFS volunteers were deployed to Victoria, South Australia and for the first time, to Western Australia.
