Major Incident Coordinator
Role Description
Scope
The Major Incident Coordinator (MIC) is responsible for coordinating bush firefighting operations and other emergencies within a specified area of NSW, for which the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) or the Commissioner are responsible.
Fundamental Protocols underpin the actions of all RFS members and must be adhered to at all times. They outline the Principles of being an RFS member and provide guidance on conduct to support the safety and wellbeing of members.
Accountabilities
- Coordinating bush firefighting operations; or other emergencies for which the RFS or the Commissioner are responsible within a specified area of NSW including:
- Ensuring implementation of, and compliance with, the levels of bush fire alert and operational readiness set by the Director State Operations (DSO) within the MICs responsibility;
- Ensuring implementation of, and compliance with, State Operations Plans within the MICs responsibility;
- Liaising with Incident Controllers (ICs) and District Managers (DMs)/ District Duty Operations Officers (DDOOs) on incident strategies and resourcing in relation to bush firefighting or other emergency operations within the MICs responsibility;
- Providing advice and guidance to ICs in relation to escalation of Incident Alert Levels and any potential need for the issuing of an Emergency Alert (EA);
- Managing all resource requests, and deployment of resources, within the MICs area of responsibility ensuring all details are maintained on the master resource spreadsheets, in the MIC folder on Microsoft Teams;
- Developing and disseminating mobilisation and demobilisation for resources assisting with out of area operations, including any liaison required with the Major Incident Logistics Support (MILS) team;
- Monitoring the performance of ICs managing incidents within the MICs responsibility and immediately reporting any need for additional assistance or support to the State Operations Controller (SOC);
- Liaising with state level liaison officers for emergency services, and functional areas in support of Incident Management Teams (IMTs) and Districts, that the MIC is responsible for overseeing;
- Scaling the MIC team in accordance with operational activity to ensure IMTs and Districts are well supported;
- Ensuring that a record is maintained of significant decisions taken, the rationale for those decisions, and to whom, when and how they were communicated; and
- Regularly reporting to the SOC and/or Deputy Commissioners as appropriate.
