Use of Aircraft in Firefighting

Foundational

Scope

This Operational Guideline is to be considered when aircraft are being used during firefighting and related operations.

Fundamental Protocols underpin the actions of all NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) members and must be adhered to at all times. They outline the Principles of being an RFS member and provide guidance on conduct to support the safety and wellbeing of members.

Guiding Principles

  • Aircraft may be used for any of the following tasks:
    • Strategic reconnaissance (e.g. high altitude aerial Imaging);
    • Tactical reconnaissance (e.g. low altitude visual spotting);
    • Fireground reconnaissance (e.g. observation of fire behaviour and firefighting operations from a manned aircraft or a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS);
    • Firebombing (e.g. water/retardant/incendiary dropping by fixed or rotary wing aircraft);
    • Air attack supervision (supervision and coordination of aircraft conducting attacks on fire);
    • Aerial transport of firefighting crews, equipment, and supplies;
    • Aerial insertion and recovery of remote area crews; and/or
    • Rescue operations using aircraft.
  • Personnel are not to be in, or close, to areas targeted for aerial attack.
  • All crews must be advised when aircraft are operating on an incident ground.
