2017 Nowra Show
Published Date: 29 Dec 2017
Summary
On a day with a Total Fire Ban declared across the state, the Shoalhaven District chainsaw operators showed the crowd at the 2017 Nowra Show some of the specialist tree felling skills used by NSW RFS when combating bush fires.
Garry Brumfield from Tomerong Brigade showed how precise these operators are when, like sighting a rifle, he landed his pole directly on target. Walter Stannard from Wandandian Brigade narrowly missed when he dropped his pole only 2 degrees off line of the target showing that with only a minor sighting error the faller will miss the mark. Steve McKinnon also from Tomerong Brigade only narrowly missed his target despite having to fall the pole with his axe after the use of his heritage Danarm chainsaw was disallowed by the ring steward as it did not meet minimum equipment safety standards used by NSW RFS chainsaw operators.
The fireline fallers will return to Nowra Show on 10 February 2018 with even more displays of chainsaw operator skills in the afternoon and this year culminating in the felling of seven 10-metre-high poles in front of the Main Arena Grand Stand in the evening.
