A GROUP of year 9 and 10 students at Dubbo College Delroy Campus are involved in a newly developed physical activity and sports studies course which incorporates the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) Cadets program and the State Emergency Service (SES) Cadets program.
Teacher and middle schools co-ordinator Paul Woodhead said the course had a working title of Beyond Yourself because all three components encouraged students to look and work beyond themselves and their comfort zone.

"The course came out of students' requests for opportunities to develop leadership experiences especially for those students who do not normally have access to leadership development opportunities," he said.
"The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme runs all year and provides students with the opportunity to attempt bronze and silver awards. Sections that need to be covered include skills development, physical training, volunteering in the community and an adventurous journey, which could be a bush walk, canoe trip or leadership camp."
Mr Woodhead is an RFS instructor and this term he is working with Kennedy Tourle from Orana Area Fire Command to run a cadets program for the students.
"We are following the Basic Fire-fighter course curriculum and learning the essentials of fire safety, fire behaviour and fire management, which includes the use of hoses, pumps, tankers, radios and a variety of personal protection equipment and hand tools."
Mr Woodhead said the SES Cadets program would be delivered by SES instructors in semester two.
