FOUR people escaped with their lives after walking away from what could have easily been a fatal crash yesterday morning.
At 8am, a Holden Barina and a Toyota Landcruiser collided head -on about 22 kilometres east of Dubbo on the Golden Highway near the Barbigle Road.
The Landcruiser was travelling east along the highway and the Barina west.
Orana Local Area Command (LAC) allege the Landcruiser was, at the time, travelling in the opposite lane and crashed into the Barina.
The Landcruiser rolled several times before coming to rest 100m away from the Barina.
At 8.30am three paramedics, the Orana LAC and two NSW Rural Fire Service vehicles arrived on the scene.
The Golden Highway was blocked as a result of the crash, with almost 20 vehicles backed up waiting to past the wreckage.
Local police began letting traffic down one side of the highway at 8.45am.
A female occupant of the Barina, believed to have been the driver, was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital with minor injuries.
The male occupant, believed to be the driver's partner, returned to the car to collect her handbag.
He sustained minor grazing to the right side of his face and cuts to his legs.
He was later taken to Dubbo Base with minor injuries.
The Barina appeared to sustain the most damage in the collision, losing its front passenger wheel and bumper bar.
The two occupants of the Landcruiser were also taken to Dubbo Base Hospital with minor injuries.
There were no Volunteer Rescue Association or State Emergency Services vehicles on the scene.
Acting Inspector Keith Ridley said the section of the Golden Highway was closed for almost three hours before normal traffic resumed after 10.30am.
"As a result of the crash, four people were sent to Dubbo Base Hospital with minor injuries - two from the Barrina and two from the Landcruiser," he said.
"Investigations are continuing into the accident and police believe fatigue may have been an issue."
Meanwhile on the Daily Liberal Facebook page Martin Savage commented on the accident.
"I was on my way to Mudgee this morning and was one of the first on the scene," he said.
"Both cars are a write-off. Not quite a full head-on, but very bad. Everyone involved should buy a lotto ticket, (they're) all very lucky to walk away."
