Adam Lummis of Dubbo Headquarters Brigade

Summary

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is pleased to announce that Mr. Adam Lummis of Dubbo Headquarters Brigade in Region West has been successful in his application for the NSW RFS Young Leader Scholarship for 2017.

The NSW RFS Young Leader Scholarship has been created to recognise and develop the leadership skills of emerging young leaders in the NSW RFS. The scholarship affords young leaders the opportunity to develop practical leadership and communication skills by partic...ipating as a member of a youth crew aboard a voyage on the Young Endeavour.

Adam Lummis has been chosen as the recipient of the Scholarship based on the merit of his application and the statement of support from Cameron Bruce, Senior Deputy Captain of Dubbo Headquarters Brigade with the endorsement of Lyndon Wieland, District Manager of Orana.

In 2012 Adam became a junior member of the Dubbo Headquarters Brigade and active participant in the Orana Cadet program. Adam’s excellent participation and leadership skills helped him to become the crew leader of the Orana Cadet team which competed at two NSW RFS State Championships and three Australian Fire Cadet Championships. The Orana Cadet team placed in multiple events in both the State and National Championships under Adam’s leadership.

In 2015 when Adam turned 16 he was unanimously voted in by his fellow brigade members to an active member of Dubbo Headquarters Brigade. Senior Deputy Captain Bruce said in his statement of support “Adam has always represented the NSW RFS with pride and positivity, representing the values at all times and always willing and striving to achieve more”.

The panel agreed that Adam’s application displayed great maturity and self awareness in his responses to the eligibility questions and were impressed that he identified specific leadership skills he wishes to improve upon should he be successful and embark on a journey aboard the Young Endeavour. Adam clearly articulated his motivation and aspirations for applying for the scholarship and how he intends to share his experiences with his team members and pass his skills on to junior members of the Orana Cadet Program.

A voyage aboard the Young Endeavour will give Adam an opportunity to participate in the challenges of sailing a square-rigged tall ship, learning skills such as how to navigate, keep watch, set and furl sails, climb the 30 metre mast, take the helm and cook in the galley. During the 11-day voyage, Adam will live ‘between decks’ in a close community with other youth crew from across Australia and will be encouraged to identify and pursue personal and team goals and challenges.

We would like to congratulate Adam on his achievement in being the first NSW RFS member to receive this scholarship and we wish him well on his voyage in April.
